Before the Roman legions conquered the West Liguria, the Riviera tribes venerated a native god called BORMANUS. Adored and feared god of the waters, BORMANUS, according to the legend, lived in a thick and wild forest, maybe a mysterious sacred wood consecrated to him (LUCUS). BORMANUS would derive from a divinity of the springs and this name makes us suppose that hot thermal waters gushed out in this zone. We can’t be certain about the exact location of this legendary forest; only two sources give us some useful information: the “Tavola Peutingeriana” (IV century A.D.) and the itinerary of Antonino. On the contrary, we know for a certainty that the inhabitants of that region feared it very much: they did not dare to go into it after the sunset. Heedless of the sacred character of this place, the Romans built on it the imperial road Julia Augusta razing the sacred wood to the ground. Here a “mansio”, an halting place for the troops, was settled, and was called Lucus Bormani from the ancient Ligurian name of this place. The mythical local god was replaced during the Republican Age and little by little was assimilated to goddess Diana, protectress of woods and hunting, who had a lot of affinities with the Ligurian god whose name has lived on up to now.
